Hollywood Post Alliance Gives Panasonic an Engineering Excellence Award for AVC-Intra 100 Codec (26/11/2008)

Panasonic PBITS Professional & Broadcast IT Systems has announced that Panasonic's AVC-Intra 100 video codec has been recognised by the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) with an Engineering Excellence Award. The Engineering Excellence Award was created to showcase and reward inventors, manufacturers, vendors, and companies for outstanding product or technology application offerings. Winners are judged to represent a significant step forward for the post-production industry, and the HPA experienced a record number of entrants this year.

"We are delighted that the Hollywood post community has singled out the Panasonic AVC-Intra 100," says Michael Bergeron, Strategic Technical Liaison, Panasonic North America, who accepted the award at the HPA annual gala in Los Angeles. "For some time, our customers and technology partners have been asking for a 10-bit, full raster, intra-frame HD codec capable of operating in field acquisition equipment, as well as in desktop hardware and software. We are very proud of this technology, which meets these challenging industry requirements and is the result of much hard work and dedication by our outstanding engineers, and Panasonic's unrelenting commitment to technical advancement."

The file-based AVC-Intra video codec can achieve the compression ratio required to encode full-resolution, 10-bit independent (intra) frame HD video at 100 Mbps. The codec allows users to capture master-quality video with exceptional colour depth and higher encoding efficiency. AVC-Intra is available in Panasonic's new P2 HD VariCam camcorders (AJ-HPX2700 and AJ-HPX3700), AJ-HPX3000 P2 HD camcorder, and the AJ-HPM110 P2 Mobile recorder/player. AVC-Intra is suitable for portable field acquisition, as well as for making master archives. "This award from the Hollywood post community further confirms the acceptance of AVC-Intra 100 codec technology by the European market. There is no doubt that this technology meets all market requirements," says Volker Kersbaum, PBITS Product Manager, Business Systems/Broadcast & Professional AV. "All European broadcasters and independent production companies that have made the commitment to AVC-Intra feel confident they have made the right decision relative to quality and the future-proofing of their investment."
