High Definition for everyone - Sony broadens range of HD options at NAB 2005 (28/2/2005)

On stand SU6406 at NAB this year, Sony is showcasing a comprehensive line-up of products that support evolution to High Definition while extracting maximum value from broadcasters' SD investments.

"With the world's media industry migrating rapidly to High Definition, Sony offers a complete range of HD solutions to suit all budgets and production needs - from the convenience and affordability of an entry level HDV camcorder to the ultimate quality of HDCAM SR", comments Naomi Climer, Director of Media Sales, Western Europe. "Alongside latest additions to its Standard Definition portfolio, Sony is emphasising at NAB this year that the era of 'HD for everyone' has arrived".

Sony will also be demonstrating workflow innovation in action with the full range of networked and non-linear production tools from Sony. These include the XDCAM Professional Disc production system, working with XPRI non linear editing family.

NEW PRODUCT ROUNDUP

SRW-5500 HDCAM-SR VTR

The SRW-5500 offers the same peerless HDCAM SR performance of the SRW-5000 but adds the convenience of HDCAM recording as well. While HDCAM is the worlds' favourite HD format for mainstream productions, HDCAM SR is now well know at the top end of the market with multiformat 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 recording, along with 12 audio channels.

HDW-S280/1 Portable HDCAM Recorder

A new addition to the HDCAM family, the HDW-S280/1 portable recorder operates at the frame rates used for the creation of prestige and mainstream high definition programmes. It can record and playback 1080-line interlaced and progressive pictures in 50i, 59.94i, 23.98PsF, 24PsF, 25PsF and 29.97PsF modes, removing the need to hold separate recorders for European, American and Japanese productions.

In addition to AC operation, the HDW-S280/1 can also be battery driven, for use in outside broadcast vehicles, helicopters, cars etc. A built-in LCD monitor allows on-the-spot picture confirmation.

HDC-X310 HD Multi-Purpose Camera

The highly compact HDC-X310 camera is an attractive choice for 'any time, any place' HD picture acquisition. Equally suited to the needs of corporate programme makers, broadcasters, events companies and industrial users, the camera features a network style fibre optic interface that simplifies the transmission of true 1080i HD signals over long distances. The HDC-X310 is thus ideal for deployment in hard-to-reach locations where a conventional HD acquisition solution would be impractical. A 19x zoom auto focus lens option is also available.

MSW-970P MPEG IMX Camcorder DVW-970P Digital Betacam Camcorder

Two new camcorders will be introduced at NAB 2005, re-affirming the Sony commitment to the MPEG IMX and Digital Betacam formats. The MSW-970P and DVW-970P offers 14-bit A/D conversion, reduced smear levels and a slow shutter function for use when shooting under demanding lighting conditions.

DSR-400P / DSR-450WSP DVCAM Camcorder

The new DSR-400P camcorder builds on the strengths of the popular DSR-390P, adding three 2/3-inch Power HAD EX CCD sensors (4:3) for improved horizontal resolution and smear performance. Successor to the DSR-570WSP, the widescreen (16:9) DSR-450WSP affords fresh creative possibilities. Both camcorders offer other enhancements including: 2.5 inch built-in LCD monitor, assignable buttons for quick access to frequently-used functions; an adjustable shoulder pad; scene file storage to Memory Stick and InfoLithium battery for positive indication of available shooting time.

DSR-2000AP/DSR-1800AP/DSR-1600AP DVCAM Studio VTR

Latest additions to the 'Master Series' of studio VTRs offer a cost effective option for corporate programme makers and local television stations requiring optimum performance from the DVCAM format. All models feature iLINK connectivity as standard, and seamless integration into HD workflows is provided via a HD-SDI (1080/50i) Output Board option.

DSBK-2020/DSBK-1820 HD Upconverter Board

Broadcasters can realise fresh value from their existing DVCAM / DV tape libraries with a HD converter board option for DSR-2000P/2000AP and DSR-1800P/1800AP/1600/1600AP VTRs. Standard Definition content can be converted to full 1080i resolution via HD-SDI interface for production and distribution within an HDCAM infrastructure, giving broadcasters a seamless bridge between the HD world and their legacy DVCAM and DV-based content assets.
